ZIMBABWE ON THE EDGE: MNANGAGWA FACES BIGGEST THREAT YET

3

Zimbabwe is facing serious political trouble again. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is in a power struggle with his deputy, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. This battle has created chaos in the ruling party, Zanu PF. One person who has made things worse for Mnangagwa is Blessed Geza, a former war veteran and expelled party official. Geza has spoken out loudly against the President, calling for his removal immediately.

Geza is against Mnangagwa’s plan to stay in power beyond 2028. He believes the President is trying to trick people by adding two more years to his term, which would extend his rule to 2030. Many say this is just a way for Mnangagwa to get a third term. Mnangagwa denies this and says he follows the constitution, but his supporters are openly pushing for him to stay longer.

Geza has been very aggressive in his attacks. He has warned Mnangagwa to step down within 10 days or face action. Though he later denied being behind a social media post that made this threat, his other words and actions show that he is part of a bigger plan to remove the President. He has even said he will take over the State House and that real political drama is about to start.

His words remind people of the past when opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai fought against former President Robert Mugabe. Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before he was removed in a military coup led by Mnangagwa and Chiwenga in 2017. Tsvangirai, who was Mugabe’s biggest rival, died in 2018.

Geza’s attacks have shaken Zanu PF. His boldness has shown that there is division within the ruling party. Many fear that these fights could lead to more instability in Zimbabwe. The party has already expelled Geza, but war veterans who support him refuse to leave Zanu PF. They argue that Mnangagwa was not even a real fighter during the war for independence, so he has no right to push them out.

Despite the threats and pressure from Mnangagwa’s allies, Geza remains firm. He says he is not fighting for a faction within Zanu PF but for all Zimbabweans. However, many people do not trust these fights within Zanu PF. They are tired of politicians who promise change but do not deliver. Even if Chiwenga takes over, people fear that nothing will improve.

Mnangagwa has been in politics for a long time. His history is full of violence, oppression, and corruption. He was one of Mugabe’s top men, helping him stay in power by using force. Mnangagwa’s most infamous role was in the 1980s during the Gukurahundi massacres, where thousands of people in the Midlands and Matabeleland were killed. When he took over in 2017, he promised a “new dispensation.” But instead of bringing change, his government has continued to rule with an iron fist. His time in power has been marked by corruption, human rights abuses, and attacks on the opposition.

Geza and his fellow war veterans have accused Mnangagwa of ruining the economy. They say his government is full of nepotism, looting, and mismanagement. The international community has also criticized Mnangagwa. The United States has placed sanctions on some of his officials for human rights abuses and corruption. Britain has also taken action against some of his close allies.

The main problem Mnangagwa faces now is that he has two big enemies. First, the people of Zimbabwe are tired of his rule. His government has made life difficult for many, and if protests start, it will be hard for him to control them. Second, he is losing the support of those who helped him take power in 2017. Chiwenga and the military played a big role in removing Mugabe, and if they turn against him now, he will be in deep trouble.

Right now, Zimbabwe is in a dangerous situation. The fight for power between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga is heating up. The war veterans are openly rebelling, and the people are frustrated with how the country is being run. What happens next will depend on the military, the war veterans, and the Zimbabwean people. One thing is clear: Mnangagwa’s grip on power is weaker than ever, and the coming months will decide his political fate.

  1. While the situation is chaotic, it’s promising that key figures are challenging Mnangagwa’s rule. Change often starts from within. This division could force Zanu PF to rethink its policies, potentially leading to better governance and improved lives for ordinary Zimbabweans.

  2. The tensions within Zanu PF show that democracy might still have a chance. If leaders like Geza are willing to speak out against corruption, there’s hope for accountability. Geza’s pushback highlights that even within the ruling party, there are individuals who won’t stand for Mnangagwa’s broken promises. Maybe this will spark real political reform.

  3. Geza’s rhetoric might only deepen divisions and instability, pushing Zimbabwe closer to political and economic collapse. This power struggle isn’t about helping Zimbabweans—it’s just another internal fight for control among the elite. Instead of offering a real alternative, Geza’s actions risk plunging the country into further chaos, leaving ordinary citizens to suffer more. It’s hard to trust anyone in Zanu PF anymore. These infighting factions only care about themselves, not the people.
