Nobody queued to vote for a Toyota Fortuner. Nobody endured intimidation so that an opposition official could acquire a better title while citizens lost their voice. Yet Zimbabweans are watching another argument over appointments inside the CCC, with precious little explanation of how any of it advances the struggle for democratic government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest development is Sengezo Tshabangu\u2019s reported appointment of Susan Matsunga as interim national organiser, alongside Evans Ndaba as her deputy. ZimEye reported complaints from party insiders that the appointments lacked an internal democratic process. The obvious question is who authorised these individuals to reorganise a movement built on other people\u2019s votes and sacrifices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matsunga\u2019s elevation deserves scrutiny because of what preceded it. In April, Wicknell Chivayo publicly offered her a Toyota Fortuner and US$50,000 after she praised President Emmerson Mnangagwa over borehole provision. The cash was described as funding for community projects. Chivayo denied that the offer was intended to induce her to abandon the CCC, and initially made it conditional on approval and acceptance. Those qualifications matter. They do not make the political questions disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An opposition MP can acknowledge a useful public project. There is nothing democratic about demanding that people reject clean water because they dislike the President. But why should acknowledging a government service attract a personal vehicle from a politically connected businessman? Water is a public responsibility. Providing it should neither purchase gratitude nor become an occasion for rewarding politicians who applaud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is where patronage damages public life. It creates obligations which voters cannot inspect. A constituency sees the donation announcement, but cannot know whether its representative will remain equally willing to challenge the benefactor\u2019s political friends. Even without proof of an explicit bargain, that uncertainty corrodes trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The financial dispute inside Tshabangu\u2019s CCC deepens the problem. According to 263Chat, party members have demanded an account of political funding they described as approximately US$1.4 million. They allege that the national finance committee did not meet to oversee its distribution. These are allegations, not a finding of theft. They nevertheless require accounts, records and answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zimbabweans should reject the suggestion that asking such questions weakens the opposition. An organisation seeking responsibility for the national purse must demonstrate that it can account for its own. Opposition colours cannot exempt anyone from the standards they demand of ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The damage also extends beyond internal appointments. After the 2023 elections, Tshabangu initiated recalls of elected representatives. Courts upheld recalls and barred some affected candidates from subsequent contests, helping ruling party candidates gain seats. When Nelson Chamisa left the CCC in January 2024, he alleged that ZANU PF had hijacked it. ZANU PF denied involvement and blamed opposition divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That denial belongs in the record. So does the political outcome: citizens who voted for an alternative watched their representation unravel through disputes they had no meaningful power to resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Calling every opposition figure a government agent would go beyond the evidence. It would also let individual leaders escape examination of their actual decisions. Who authorised the appointments? Who controls the money? What safeguards protect legislators from private influence? Those questions are harder to evade than another exchange of accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZANU PF benefits when its challengers spend their energy distributing positions and defending benefactors. A ruling party need not persuade disappointed voters if those voters cease believing an alternative exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But declaring democracy dead gives the powerful too much satisfaction. Zimbabwe still has citizens who insist that their votes must count. They deserve organisations with elected leadership, transparent finances and the courage to confront power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An opposition badge is easy to wear. Remaining answerable to the people who entrusted you with it is the real test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
