ZIMBABWE’S DEMOCRACY UNDER THREAT: A CALL FOR RESILIENCE AND RADICAL ACTION

3

Zimbabwe’s political arena is currently embroiled in a significant crisis, casting shadows over the integrity of its judiciary and other critical oversight institutions. The heart of this turmoil is Sengezo Tshabangu, who, while claiming the role of the CCC interim secretary-general, has initiated recalls that have stoked fears of a compromised democratic system. These actions have led analysts to suggest that the opposition party, CCC (Citizen’s Coalition for Change), might need to consider drastic measures to protect the nation’s democratic fabric, including a possible withdrawal from Parliament and councils.

Despite these daunting challenges, the CCC demonstrated remarkable resilience and strategic acumen in the recent elections held on August 23 and 24. Against the odds, they effectively blocked the ruling party, Zanu PF, from achieving their coveted two-thirds majority. This was a clear indication that financial might does not guarantee electoral success, as seen in constituencies like Cowdray Park and Mabvuku-Tafara, where CCC candidates triumphed over their well-funded Zanu PF rivals.

However, the political landscape darkened when popular CCC candidates were barred from contesting in elections, following court rulings in favor of Tshabangu’s recalls. This maneuver, which echoes President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s strategy to cement Zanu PF’s dominance, has raised alarms about Zimbabwe inching towards a one-party state scenario, despite substantial opposition support.

The backlash from these developments has been palpable among Zimbabweans, who see these maneuvers as a direct affront to their democratic choices. Observers, including the esteemed academic Ibbo Mandaza and political analyst Rashweat Mukundu, have been vocal in their criticism, highlighting the grave risk these actions pose to the pillars of democracy in Zimbabwe.

Amidst this political quandary, Stephen Chan, a professor of world politics, has put forth a radical proposition for the CCC. He suggests that the opposition could allow candidates to run as independents under specific conditions, underscoring the urgency for a vigilant and proactive stance in these tumultuous times.

The unfolding scenario in Zimbabwe is more than a political crisis; it is a critical test of the nation’s democratic resolve. The looming shadow of a Zanu PF two-thirds majority brings with it the threat of constitutional amendments that could further entrench Mnangagwa’s hold on power, including alterations to presidential term limits.

Zimbabwe’s predicament serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy and the constant vigilance required to safeguard it. The current crisis underscores the imperative for a strong, resilient democratic framework that can withstand attempts to undermine its integrity. As the nation grapples with these challenges, the call for radical action and unwavering commitment to democratic principles has never been more urgent. The path forward for the CCC and its supporters is fraught with obstacles, but it is also laden with opportunities to reaffirm the value of every vote and the power of collective resistance against the erosion of democratic freedoms.

  1. History will never forget sellouts like Sengezo Tshabangu, this is beyond internal party conflicts but a mere act of greed. The man used tribalism card to set scores and award ZANU PF so many free seats. All this has nothing to do with whatever reasons he told everyone, its just for his personal again.

  2. As long as ZANU PF is in power, our democracy will always be under threat. We are being led by murderers, the people behind Gukurahundi and the many unexplained disappearance of journalists like Itai Dzamara. The regime is brutal and will do anything to stay in power. Imagine what they did with opposition MP recalls – such a disrespect for the will of the people.
