CHAMISA FINALLY SPEAKS OUT AS QUESTIONS GROW OVER HIS POLITICAL SILENCE

For a long time, many Zimbabweans have been asking the same question about opposition leader Nelson Chamisa. Why did he walk away from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) after the turmoil that followed the 2023 elections? Why has he spent much of the last two years on the sidelines while President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s supporters push the controversial 2030 agenda? And perhaps most importantly, why has he not mounted a stronger challenge against a government he has long accused of failing the people?

These questions have fueled growing speculation that Chamisa may have reached some form of understanding with Mnangagwa. While no evidence has ever been produced to support such claims, the rumours have continued to spread across social media, political circles and ordinary conversations around the country.

Now, for the first time, Chamisa has directly and publicly rejected the accusations that he has been compromised or secretly working with the ruling establishment.

Responding to critics, Chamisa argued that many of the events that have unfolded since the 2023 elections would make little sense if he was truly allied with Mnangagwa.

One of the points he raised was the rise of Sengezo Tshabangu, whose actions led to the seizure of key CCC structures and triggered major divisions within the opposition. Chamisa questioned why such a process would have been necessary if he had already agreed to work with those in power.

He also pointed to Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which has generated significant political debate. Chamisa suggested that the proposed constitutional changes would not have been needed if there was genuine cooperation between him and the government. In his view, such measures were evidence of political hostility rather than partnership.

Chamisa further claimed that huge amounts of money have been spent over the years to weaken him politically. According to him, state resources have been used to influence individuals, organisations and institutions in an effort to damage his reputation and isolate him from potential allies.

He alleged that billions have been spent buying influence, recruiting supporters and rewarding people with benefits such as vehicles, all with the goal of destroying his credibility in the eyes of the public.

However, Chamisa did not provide evidence to support these claims. He did not offer figures, documents or examples that could independently verify the allegations he made. As a result, his comments are likely to generate as many questions as answers.

For some of his supporters, the statement will be welcomed as a long overdue response to rumours that have followed him for months. They see it as a clear rejection of claims that he has abandoned the struggle for political change.

For others, the statement may not be enough. Critics continue to question his decision to leave the CCC and remain largely absent from active political confrontation for an extended period. They argue that public declarations alone will not remove doubts that have grown during his political silence.

What is clear is that Chamisa remains a central figure in Zimbabwean politics despite his reduced visibility in recent years. His ability to attract attention with a single statement shows that many Zimbabweans still see him as an important player in the country’s future political direction.

Whether his latest remarks will silence speculation is another matter entirely. In politics, trust is not built through words alone. Many people will be looking for actions, not statements, as they decide whether Chamisa is truly preparing for a political comeback or whether questions about his role will continue to follow him into the future.
